The Black-tailed
skimmer and keeled skimmer dragonfly are local
species ranked five on the scale of scarcity in Ireland. As they
have opposing habitat requirements, Marl lakes and Sphagnum
bogs respectively, they are not usually found together but both
can be seen at Finnamores and Tumduff Mor from May onwards.
The Parklands
commonest species is the Common darter, which can be seen
hunting over lakes and among woodlands throughout the complex, while
the Brown hawker can be seen hawking around the edges of
lakes and pools in the Cloghan wetlands.
The colourful
Branded damselfly is the Parklands most habitat-restricted
damselfly. It favours slow moving streams with muddy bottoms and
although it has been seen at Finnamores it is not thought to be
breeding there.
More common species, such as the Large Red, Blue-tailed and
Common Blue damselfly are also found at Finnamores during
the summer months.
