The Lough Boora Parklands and Bord na Móna will host a Sculpture Symposium as an innovative approach to the interpretation and development of the cutaway bogs in West Offaly.

The symposium will bring together a team of 4 Irish and 2 international artists to create a series of land and environmental art using the natural materials within the landscape. The artists will work and live within the community for three weeks in September 2002.

The sculptural pieces by the commissioned artist will remain as a legacy in the Parklands and will become a part of their permanent collection.

The symposium will highlight Lough Boora Parklands as a creative resource of national significance.

A primary education programme hosted by the Sculptor's Society of Ireland will take place at the Parklands during the symposium. Over 60 students from 5 schools will participate.

WHERE?

Lough Boora Parklands is Offaly’s newest environment project on Ireland’s newest landscape.
For over half a century Bord na Mona utilised the bogs of West Offaly for energy purposes. When all the peat was removed a new landscape was uncovered cutaway bog. This expansive unencumbered landscape is emerging as a unique habitat for flora and fauna.
